June-July 2004 return from Georgian Bay…the long route.

Four weeks took us from Penetanguishene on Georgian Bay up into the North Channel, back down to Tobermory, down Lake Huron, through the St Clair/Detroit Rivers, Lake Erie and back through the Welland Canal to Lake Ontario, and our new base at Cobourg Marina.
Departure June 5th. Final duties fill-up, pump-out and pay our bill for the year.

With 33nm to go we motor out the channel past Giant’s Tomb, Christian, Beckwith and Hope Islands, sail across Nottawasaga Bay and motor into a flat calm Macgregor Harbour. At the beginning of this trip we’re wearing long underwear, fleece hats and full gloves.

July-August 2003 … 4 lakes, 2 rivers, 2 bays, 1 canal.

Three weeks from Etobicoke Yacht Club up the lakes to Georgian Bay, about 800 nautical miles of sailing.

For the up bound transit of the Welland Canal we took an extra crew, EYC member Rolf Weiler. We arrived at the Lake Ontario end at approximately 4pm, July 23, contacted the canal captain and had only to wait for one freighter to exit before entering the canal.

June-July 2002 … first “cruise” to 1000 Islands.

front

We packed a lot into 2 weeks including near disaster. Departure from Etobicoke Yacht club June 22 in calm but threatening weather. This trip we are carrying a laptop to use “The Cap’n Voyager” as nav tool for the first time. Getting components to communicate takes some patience and trouble-shooting. Peter Evans, captain of Quismat, RVYC Vancouver, with us for early part of trip.

First stop: Frenchman’s Bay, Pickering, anchorage. The bay is shallow, but buoyed, with great holding and one of the few natural anchorages on Lake Ontario. Excellent spot for some early morning painting.
June 23 arrive in Cobourg. From here we take the “inside” route: Brighton Bay, Murray Canal, Bay of Quinte, Long Reach, Prinyers Cove to Kingston.
